The
Mailbox and Beyond Finding
the legendary mailbox of Steve Medlin was, for me, one of the most
memorable parts of the trip. Many stories tell of a black mailbox that is the only sign of an entrance to Area 51. I can see how you might miss this at night, especially coming from Las Vegas headed towards Rachel. The black mailbox, when we saw it was big, white, padlocked and covered with graffiti. At this point, we still had no idea how far we actually were from the base entrance.
There are stories that even from here people have seen UFOs. So, finally off we went, down the mailbox road ... The
first interesting thing we saw was a dust devil crossing ahead of
us as we slowly made our way along the rough and wide dirt road.
At this point, I began to wonder how crazy this excursion actually was. One
little car problem, and we'd fry in the desert heat. It felt like
a few weeks could go by before anyone might happen by.

Area 51 is protected by almost a thousand square miles of restricted airspace. It is
certainly used for testing advanced technology aircraft. Things reportedly seen include:
a camouflage painted biplane, a pave hawk helicopter,
Stealth Bomber, F-15s, B-1s, stealth security helicopters, a flare shooting up from the base,
planes with only red strobe lights, hovering pairs of lights and a blackhawk helicopter. Area 51
is a known testing facility for the U2 spy plane. Notice that the U2 emblem contains a
