12/6/2004 Health (yahoo) Common germ killer may cause nerve damage.

"There haven't been many studies of the toxic effects of this compound, methyl-isothiazolinone or MIT, the researcher noted in a telephone interview with Reuters Health. "There are many documented instances of people being exposed to MIT in the workplace -- most of what one sees is contact burns or dermatitis or allergic sensitization," he said"

"There is mounting evidence that a number of neurodegenerative disorders may be triggered or exacerbated by exposure to occupational or environmental agents ... Neurodegenerative disorders in humans may be triggered or exacerbated by exposure to occupational or environmental agents. Here, we show that a brief exposure to methylisothiazolinone, a widely used industrial and household biocide, is highly toxic to cultured neurons. ... Because of their widespread use, the neurotoxic consequences of both acute and chronic human exposure to these toxins need to be evaluated. - The Journal of Neuroscience, September 1, 2002, 22(17):7408-7416

Try this: The Truth About Antibacterial Soaps--And Why You Should Avoid Them which says in part, that "antibacterial soaps are used in households across the country where they amount to a $16 billion-a-year industry. Some 72 percent of all liquid soap sold in the United States now contains antibacterial ingredients. ... The active ingredient in most antibacterial products is triclosan, an antibacterial agent that kills bacteria and inhibits bacterial growth. But not only does triclosan kill bacteria, it also has been shown to kill human cells." Also see this list of other things you might want to avoid and why.

"Triclosan is manufactured in the U.S. by Ciba Specialty Chemicals, under their trade name Irgasan DP300." Anything in the wrong amount can be dangerous, even pure water.

12/6/2004 Health Because I have a problem with dry eyes and the condiction can be caused by hormone disruption, I found this interesting: "These "mouthful" chemicals (diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, and triethanolmine) are hormone-disrupting chemicals known to form nitrates and nitrosamines, often in conjunction with other chemicals present in a product, e.g., Cocamide DEA, or Lauramide DEA. They are almost always in products that foam; bubble bath, body wash, shampoo, soap, facial cleanser." -lch

11/19/2004 Health Vioxx Recalled. FDA official David Graham has singled out five other drugs on the market that need closer scrutiny and for stating that the FDA due to conflicts of interest can no longer protect the American people from dangerous drugs like Vioxx. Graham said as many as 50,000 people may have died due to using this drug over the years.

Also named were "AstraZeneca's Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug; Meridia, a weight-loss drug by Abbott Laboratories; Accutane, an acne-fighting drug by Roche Holdings; Bextra, an arthritis pain-relieving drug by Pfizer; and GlaxoSmithKline's Serevent, an asthma drug."

"The decision by Merck to withdraw Vioxx from the market could cost the company as much as $18 billion over the next decade" - mednews

11/19/2004 Health Bextra: Another dangerous drug?

BREAKING NEWS: 11-10-04 - BEXTRA MORE THAN DOUBLES RISK OF HEART ATTACK - This week, researchers said a preliminary study indicated that Bextra, a painkiller in the same class as Vioxx, more than doubled the risk of heart attack. Bextra has also been linked to strokes, heart disease, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis and erythema multiforme. 11/19/2004 Health. Dry Eye Relief. Here's a great idea I found with Google's new scholar search tool: Put sponges around your glasses and keep them moist to reduce or eliminate dry eye symptoms. Worth a try! See our dry eye syndrome article for more.

11/16/2004 Health. Healing Cavities. Someone wrote to ask how big the cavities I healed with a better diet over the course of a few years. I'm not sure. The dentist who told me I had 10 cavities said that once they reach the cavity stage like mine were, they won't ever heal. I showed this to be wrong. In my article on cavities I ask: "How much enamel can be destroyed and still re-grow?" I still don't know. But cavities take months to several years to form.

I was told that after "the protein matrix" broke down, re-mineralization could not take place. So, I had this vision of a tooth as a protein net filled in by minerals, but this contradicts other things I've read that say after the tooth forms, there is no longer any matrix of protein, just mineral.

"Enamel is characterized developmentally by a protein template largely composed of amelogenin, a protein secreted by cells of the epithelium. Amelogenin binds tightly to calcium and -- oddly -- also to cell surfaces [H+02]. Initially, the cap area is almost all protein, 90% of which is amelogenin [MP00]. As the tooth matures, the protein matrix is gradually degraded until the fully developed hypermineralized condition is reached, with close packing of the enamel structures [D+01]."

Rocks with holes of any size can be filled in if new rock is added, so I'd say if you remove the bacteria and other acid from your teeth and get the right minerals in your saliva, that almost any size of hole can eventually fill in. I'm no dentist or doctor, so this is just my best guess.

The reason to get cavities filled is bacteria can live inside your teeth and they can keep digging and making the situation worse if they have sugar (starch) to eat. You don't want to get an ugly growth of bacteria in a tooth because it can get into your bloodstream and some types cause heart trouble.

So, what I'd do if you want to heal your cavities is this: tell your dentist that you are quitting sugar, going on a program to rebuild your tooth health with a better diet, and you'd like to know if any of your cavities can be watched to see if they remineralize. If your dentist says no, get a second oppinion. If you have to have them filled, use a laser dentist because the laser will kill the bacteria and you don't need a shot!

Oh, for remineralization, one thing I've been using is the Eco-dent powder. I did NOT use flouride toothpastes or flouridated water or any other kind of flouride at all and I healed 5 cavities. (I'd read that flouride in the wrong dose weakens your teeth.) My experiment paid off for me. Best of luck to you! Here is some good info on rebuilding teeth.

HOW DOES THE BODY FIGHT DENTAL DEMINERALIZATION? To counter demineralization, the body had to solve an interesting problem: If dental minerals are only soluble in acids, how can it create replacement mineral ions in a way that also doesn't dissolve enamel, as strong stable acids do? The solution is so elegant, so simple, and so invisible that you don't even realize it's happening! This natural mechanism is enhanced be eating unprocessed foods, rich in minerals, including trace minerals, such as natural and organic foods.

WHAT IS THIS NATURAL REMINERALIZATION MECHANISM? Our bodies utilize carbon dioxide from our breath and water from our saliva to create a mild, unstable acid, carbonic acid. Carbonic acid is the heart of the natural remineralization process. Like all acids, carbonic acids can dissolve minerals in our saliva (present from our food); however, unlike strong stable acids, carbonic acid quickly and easily converts to carbon dioxide and water. When this happens, the mineral ions that are dissolved in it precipitate out as solid mineral ions again - but not necessarily as the original mineral molecules: If a particular mineral ion is near a demineralized portion of the hydroxyapatite crystal that requires that ion, the ion is incorporated into the dental enamel! Though natural remineralization is always taking place, the level of activity varies according to conditions in the mouth.

10/22/04 Health Risks of FluMist: Encephalitis? Bird flu? Are you about to be scared out of $ for a product that may be bad for you?

"More nasal-spray flu vaccine on the way Oct 22, 2004 (CIDRAP News) - "MedImmune will produce another million doses of its nasal-spray influenza vaccine, FluMist, which could free up some injectable flu vaccine for high-risk groups, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson announced yesterday."

Oh, good! Except, according to Dr. Sherri Tenpenny, physician in charge of a bustling Integrative medical clinic,

"... Hundreds of TV and print advertisements have been designed to persuade everyone into taking the FluMist plunge. The campaign will be the "most intense, direct-to-consumer marketing campaign ever waged for a vaccine," costing an estimated $25 million over the next 2.5 months [2]. In addition, Wyeth, MedImmune's partner, plans a three-year, $100 million campaign to encourage use of the nasal flu vaccine among physicians.[3]

... Print advertisements and magazine articles apparently will use scare tactics-similar to those that were used while promoting the smallpox vaccine-which warned of the high possibility of a "bioterror attack using the flu virus."[4]

Apparently, the goal seems to center around frightening or inducing enough guilt that everyone would begin to demand the vaccine as soon as it is available. And at nearly $70 a dose, ($46?) this will be a financial bonanza for MedImmune and Wyeth, who are expecting the vaccine to become the blockbuster new drug that will push MedImmune's revenues to more than $1billion/year."

... Each 0.5ml of the formula contains 10 6.5-7.5 particles of live, attenuated influenza virus. That means that between 10 million and 100 million viral particles will be forcefully injected into the nostrils when administered. The viral strain was developed by serial passage through "specific pathogen-free primary chick kidney cells" and then grown in "specific pathogen-free eggs." That means that the culture media was free of pathogens that were specifically tested for, but not a culture that was necessarily "pathogen-free." The risk that the vaccine may contain contaminant avian retroviruses still remains. In addition, a stabilizing buffer containing potassium phosphate, sucrose (table sugar) and nearly 0.5 mg of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is added to each dose. [18]

One of the most troubling concerns over the injection of this "chemical soup" is the potential for the viruses to enter directly into the brain. At the top of the nasal passages is a paper-thin bone called the cribriform plate. The olfactory nerves pass through this bone and line the nasal passages, carrying messenger molecules to the brain that are identified as "smells" familiar to us. The olfactory tract has long been recognized as a direct pathway to the brain. Intranasal injection of certain viruses has resulted in a serious brain infection called encephalitis, presumably by direct infection of the olfactory neurons that carried the viruses to the brain.[19] Time will tell whether the live viruses in FluMist will become linked to cases of encephalitis.

Remember, some say this planet is infested with 6.5 billion humans but can sustain only 2 billion. Some believe world leaders know this and plans are underway to reduce our numbers via wars, epidemics, and "natural" disasters. Stay sharp. Only the sharpest may survive to see the new world.

"I haven't gotten a flu shot, and I don't intend to because I want to make sure those who are most vulnerable get treated," the president said. Right, but will the president use FluMist?

"The influenza virus, as mapped by NASA scientists"

That's odd. I thought NASA did space related stuff. Are there viruses in space? Some think so. See our panspermia article.

10/1/04 Health. (photo from a NJ laser dentist) Had my first no Novocaine experience with a dental laser in Sacramento today. Two cavities filled with no needles! The dentist usually puts the laser on the tooth for 90 seconds or so to numb it then he starts using it to remove material from the tooth.

Well, I did feel something. It was a little uncomfortable, but he eased up and went slower when I made a little noise. The pain was only a 3 to 4 on a scale of 1 to 10. The pain of the drilling was less than the pain from the needle and after you are done, there is no more pain and you aren't numb. You can hear it sparking, but there is no drilling vibration at all. There was only a very slight smell.

I had a little sensitivity when I ate a few hours later. All in all, this was the best, least painful experience I've ever had at a dentist! And by the way, 5 of the 10 cavities I had 2 years ago really did heal up since I stopped eating sugar.

Read about the secret of healing cavities here.

9/30/04 Health Group finds vitamins may increase risk of cancer. The truth here is very important. Is this study a scare tactic by drug companies? I take a multi-vitamin every day and I've read vitamins decrease one's risk of cancer. Of the anti-vitamin data, researchers said:

"Statistically, these were only of borderline significance, it said, while some of the dosages recorded in the studies concerned were above the safe upper levels used for calculating ingredients in daily multivitamins and single nutrient supplements."

Why may this study be drug company BS? Take a look at who pays for experiments: "Cancer research in the UK is almost all paid for by drug companies and charities. Drug companies fund about L500 million of cancer research each year." "The Medical Research Council (UK) has funded the Cochrane Cancer Network since its inception in 1996."

One possibility to consider, before you dump your vitamins, is that cancer deaths are decreasing in part because people taking vitamins get cancer less. Less cancer death means less profit for drug companies and more overpopulation, so .. drug companies have used the UN Codex Alimentarius Commission to try to outlaw vitamins. Until I see confirmation of this anti-vitamin study by an independent lab, I'll keep taking mine. I'll also consider the above news may be part of a global drug comapny conspiracy to increase cancer rates and cancer drug profits. Some say enough vitamin C is the way to prevent heart attacks and that antioxidents decrease cancer risk. "Dr. Matthias Rath has also found that vitamin C/lysine/proline and green-tea extract ( EGCG) deactivate an enzyme that tumors use to spread."

9/23/04 Health. Dogs trained to smell bladder cancer in urine "LONDON - Man's best friend could also be a lifesaver in the fight against cancer. Scientists said on Friday dogs can be used to detect bladder cancer by smelling urine."

9/22/04 Health. Dioxin. Dioxin was listed as a "Known Human Carcinogen" in Federal Government's Ninth Report On Carcinogens ( ).

"The National Toxicology Program's listing of TCDD (dioxin)
in the 'known' category is based on sufficient evidence
of carcinogenicity from studies in humans, involving a
combination of epidemiological and mechanistic information
which indicates a causal relationship between exposure to
         TCDD and human cancer."

When you hear conflicting things about the dangers of dioxin, I recommend considering that there are huge lawsuits in the wings. ( ) Also see agent orange lawsuit examples because agent orange contains dioxin. ( )  Some things like agent orange are considered safe for use at one time and are later confirmed as causing cancer. See "Military concedes toxic chemical increases risk of illness" ( ). I also like this example:

Are dioxin risks overblown ... or under reported? Does dioxin leach out of plastic containers? In what amounts? Do dioxins disrupt human hormones? In what amounts? It all seems to depend on which expert you ask. A researcher at UC Davis told me he'd found significant hormone disruption in mice drinking from plastic bottles as compared to glass. (Unpublished study.)

To me the key is this: I don't believe the system we have today adequately protects us from industry manipulation of scientific findings. I'll lend "Trust Us, We're Experts! How Industry Manipulates Science and Gambles with your Future," by Rampton and Stauber to anyone interested.

FYI, note that dioxin is part of our local air pollution ( ) and according to one site, "Although dioxin is an environmental contaminant, most dioxin exposure occurs through the diet, with over 95% coming through dietary intake of animal fats..." ( ) Once in your body, it builds up and you can't get rid of it, but you can reduce exposure by cutting out the animal fat.

Here is some quantitative data: ( ) Am J Epidemiol. 2001 Sep 1;154(5):451-8. "for 3,538 US male chemical workers ... found a positive trend for all cancer with increasing cumulative exposure. ... excess lifetime (75 years) risk of dying of cancer given a TCDD intake of 1.0 pg/kg of body weight per day, twice the background intake, was an estimated 0.05-0.9% above a background lifetime risk of cancer death of 12.4%." Another site gives the "Range of Daily Intake of Dioxin and Dioxin-Like PCBs in Food in the U.S." as 210-420 pg/day for a 70 kg adult.

9/7/04 Health / Blog. I'm sad today over the loss of my beloved houseplants. They didn't survive the move. They were like pets to me. They were about 3 years old.

I was teaching them to fetch. With plants, it takes longer than with dogs, but I'm a very patient man.

I'd picked these plants to share my space because a NASA study said these particular plants clean the air best. They remove things like Benzene, Trichloroethylene (TCE), carbon monoxide & Formaldehyde.

Mass cane/Corn Plant grows the best. That stuff was out of control.

The table below is from Zone10. I tried all of them and kept the ones that survived the best. A little water once a week is all they asked of me.

TOP 10 plants most effective in removing: formaldehyde, benzene, and carbon monoxide from the air:

Common Name Scientific Name
Bamboo Palm Chamaedorea Seifritzii
Chinese Evergreen Aglaonema Modestum
English Ivy Hedera Helix
Gerbera Daisy Gerbera Jamesonii
Janet Craig Dracaena "Janet Craig"
Marginata Dracaena Marginata
Mass cane/Corn Plant Dracaena Massangeana
Mother-in-Law's Tongue Sansevieria Laurentii
Pot Mum Chrysantheium morifolium
Peace Lily Spathiphyllum "Mauna Loa"
Warneckii Dracaena "Warneckii"

9/1/04 Health. Fatty Fish And Alzheimer's. Eat fish once or twice a week. High amounts of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA may protect against memory loss.

8/27/04 Health Hey kids, how are those restrooms? Do you need the CALIFORNIA PUBLIC SCHOOL RESTROOM COMPLAINT HOTLINE?

8/25/04 Health Soft drinks double diabetes risk: study Covering 91,000 nurses, research links daily consumption to higher risk; beverage lobbyists slam study. Good thing I gave them up a few years ago. White sugar kills baby. Eat fruit and honey. Just as sweet and it won't destroy your organs.

8/2/04 Health. Found an anti-cavity solution? "Friendly bacteria (probiotics) have been proposed for the prevention of cavities, on the ground that they can fight harmful cavity-causing bacteria. The best evidence regards a probiotic product called Lactobacillus GG (LGG). In a double-blind, placebo controlled trial, 594 children aged 1-6 years old were given either normal milk or milk to which LGG had been added, for a period of 7 months.14 The results showed significantly fewer cavities in the children receiving LGG."

6/24/04 Health. Rocket Fuel found in California Milk and water. "Perchlorate is the explosive part of rocket fuel," said Bill Walker of the Environmental Working Group. "Without perchlorate, rocket fuel would not work." The amount found was less than 6 parts per billion, but health officials disagree on the danger of these levels. We know that perchlorate is an endocrine disrupter. It blocks the normal update of iodine in the thyroid gland which regulates metabolism. The danger is greatest for infants and children.

How did it happen? The current belief is that an explosion at a Henderson, Nevada rocket plant in 1988 caused the rocket fuel to seep into the Colorado river. Over decades it reached the supplies that provided water for cows in the lower part of California.

I don't drink milk for various reasons, but I do drink the water. Could my dry eye syndrome be caused by perchlorate pollution? There is a local problem with this pollutant:

SACRAMENTO, CA. California environmental officials Monday said they fear acceptable levels of perchlorate, a thyroid-damaging pollutant, could be made six times higher than federal recommendations. - watertechonline

Also, there is a condition called thyroid eye disease which can lead to dry eyes. And a racing heart and nervousness. What if "anxiety" or "panic" is not a mental problem, but the result of poisoning by perchlorate in your water? How could perchlorate poisoning lead to dry eyes or panic attacks?

The function of the thyroid gland is to take iodine, found in many foods, and convert it into thyroid hormones.. - endocrineweb

If perchlorate stops iodine from entering the thyroid gland, feedback systems in the body would detect the low levels and would cause the gland to over produce thyroid hormone in a rebound effect.

"When the level of thyroid hormones (T3 & T4) drops too low, the pituitary gland produces Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) which stimulates the thyroid gland to produce more hormones." - endocrineweb

Too much thyroid hormone can cause eye problems. My HMO eye doctor refused to run thyroid hormone tests, the excuse being that she would not know how to interpret the tests. Here is how. This is all just a theory and I'm not a doctor, but I think it is worthy of some serious research.

6/15/04 Health | Odd Happenings. ( ottawa) Were people in a mall in Canada attacked this Monday? Jun 15 2004 07:35 AM EDT. Dozens afflicted by strange illness at mall.

OTTAWA - More than 150 people came down with a mysterious respiratory illness at the Gloucester Centre, Monday night. The shoppers and employees in and around the food court, started to feel sick around 6 p.m. People coughed and sneezed, some felt nauseated and had trouble catching their breath. The hazardous material police unit was called, and the Gloucester Centre was evacuated and ventilated. Police say no one was hospitalized, but warned people to get medical attention if their symptoms persisted. Officials were unable to determine what caused the reaction.

5/19/04 Medical News. This guy named Ken has interesting comments on a story titled "West Virginia To Pass Compulsory Vaccination Bill" (I've been unable to confirm this.)

He says "Beyond the harm that a 'regular' vaccine may entail, you can be fairly certain that you're also going to get a bio-chip in that vaccination that is designed to both track and control you." A bio chip?

I found this when checking on a story today that says some group ( "a 13-member Institute of Medicine committee" funded by?) found no link between childhood autism and vaccines. This new study contradicts this: "Earlier investigations, also sponsored by the Institute of Medicine, a part of the nonprofit National Academies, found it was "biologically plausible" to link thimerosal with brain-developmental disorders, including autism." - sfgate Read "Trust Us, We're Experts: How Industry Manipulates Science and Gables with Your Future" by Rampton and Stauber.

4/29/04 Health : Asthma Cause. Why should you care if politicians bend the truth? Because the consequences can kill you, that's why. The Union of Concerned Scientists gives many examples of the Bush administration's manipulation of science to promote industry at the expense of the environment and public health. Just one example: By suppressing an EPA study that showed that the administration's proposed Clear Skies Act would do less than current law to reduce air pollution, Bush does physical harm to US citizens: 9 million of our red white and blue kids ( up to 17 million people in the US ) have asthma. About 5000 a year die from this according to

Don't tell me we don't know the cause or that asthma is caused by a lack of exposure to germs. The fact is, rat lungs are unlike human lungs so studies with rats are no good. There is primate research that shows asthma is caused by early exposure to automobile air pollution ( ozone smog ). Why isn't this widely known? In 2001 I was contacted by USA Today about an air pollution article. I gave the reporter the link above, but nothing came of it. Unfortunately, the pharmaceutical, auto and oil industries are making huge profits with things just the way they are. What am I doing? Buying a Super Ultra Low Emission vehicle that is up to 90% cleaner than an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle.

4/26/04 Strange Happenings. SANTIAGO, Chile -- Couples kiss during a photo session. Organizers said more than 4,000 couples participated in the kissing session sponsored by a tooth paste brand. (01/11/04 AP photo) Perhaps these people don't know that cavities are caused by a contagious bacterial disease?

4/26/04 Health Watch out for: Dangerous levels of lead in more than 100 mostly Mexican candy brands sold in California.

4/7/04 Health Corpwatch and Lip Magazine have an interesting article, bugspray in Coke and Pepsi: "... tests, including those by the Indian government, which found high concentrations of pesticides and insecticides, including lindane, DDT, malathion and chlorpyrifos, in the colas, making them unfit for consumption. Some samples tested showed the presence of these toxins to be more than 30 times the standard allowed by the European Union."

Michael who read the above writes: "One note: the pesticides found in the colas are used and have been used extensively in India for years and are in the ground water in high concentrations in many areas. Coke and Pepsi bottlers always buy syrup, but use local water. That's why if you travel through parts of Alabama and Mississippi, the coke tastes like crap. The water comes from surface reservoirs with a lot of cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae, though not an alga), so the water tastes somewhat like dirt. That is also why, as noted in the articles, American products do not contain these contaminants. My guess is that the Indian bottlers did not secure a clean water supply for the plant to maybe save a few rupies." Makes a lot of sense... I mean rupies.

4/12/04 Food Science (snopes | ) The red color of some foods (strawberry milkshakes, pink lemonade, etc.) and some fabrics comes from the crushed carcasses of a South and Central American beetle. If you see the words "carmine" or "cochineal extract" it is likely that the item obtained its red or pink color from bugs that were vacuumed up from cactuses, boiled in water, dried and then ground into a powder. Dried cochineal contains carminic acid ( 17 to 24% ). Carminic acid is an anthraquinone which protects the insects from most predators (it repells birds.)

"Dactylopius coccus was the source of a red dye used by Aztecs and Mexican Indians for centuries before the arrival of the Spaniards. Those indigenous peoples would collect cochineal insects, briefly immerse them in hot water to kill the beasties and dissolve the females' waxy coating, and then dry them in the sun. The dessicated (sic) insects would then be ground to a fine powder."

I believe Snopes is wrong from time to time (eg. on some war and political topics) but the site is still a good source of info for many urband ledgends.

4/7/04 Lyme Disease (395 | lawestvector ) I heard today that Lyme disease was in 55 of 58 counties in California as of June 2002. This potentially fatal disease is a problem according to those who have it because doctors think it is rare (it isn't), they think the tests work (they often don't), and they think short term oral anti-biotics always work (they don't). A rash and neck pain may be followed months later by join pain. The rash forms a bulls eye, but this may not always happen and does not always happen right away. This disease is caused by blood-borne Spirochetes. These spiral-shaped bacteria may persist in the human body for several years and can be passed to unborn children. It can also be passed by breast milk. This disease can eventually destroy the brian and retina.

If your California HMO doctor says you can't have Lyme disease because it is not in California, get a new doctor!

3/26/04 Bisphenol A (BPA) While researching dry eyes I found the following that may be of interest to all: According to the Los Angeles Times, two billion pounds of Bisphenol A are used yearly. At least one study links it to severe birth defects.

The chemical bisphenol A or BPA is a Xenoestrogen (hormone disrupter). BPA is one of the top 50 chemicals in production and is one of the most commonly used plastic materials. It is found in all kinds of common products, mostly in polycarbonate plastics. Nearly all plastic baby bottles in the U.S. contain BPA, as do many common food containers, water storage bottles, aluminum can linings, and even some kinds of dental sealants.

Dry eyes can be cause by hormone problems in the glands that produce tears, specifically, by low androgen levels. BPA is a known hormone disrupter. Is there a link between BPA and dry eye syndrome? Drug companies stand to make billions on eye drops. For this reason I doubt that they will be funding much research into the underlying cause of the problem.

"Bisphenol A can also act as an antiandrogen, blocking the action of dihydrotestosterone in a yeast screen containing a human androgen receptor (Sohoni and Sumpter, 1998).

Hey, wait a minute ... most eye drops for dry eyes come in plastic containers!

Positive Thinking: Dry eye syndrome is considered to be incurable and the cause is currently unknown. If BPA exposure is the cause for some people, removing this hormone disruptor from one's environment might be the first real cure for this disease. Isn't it ironic that the molecular model of BPA looks like a pair of eye-glasses?

4/1/04 Health. (newsci) Taking the drug Viagra could reduce men's fertility. A new study found that the "anti-impotence drug not only speeds sperm up, ... but it also caused the vital reaction needed to penetrate an egg to occur prematurely."

Once again what seems to be a cure for a problem is actually a cause of the problem.

"Viagra triggers the acrosome reaction early by increasing the movement of calcium into the cell, which changes its pH."

Is Viagra secretly a form of mild birth control? According to John Dean, secretary general of the European Society for Sexual Medicine, "Childless couples - and the general population - should be aware that in the five years that Viagra has been around no overall detrimental effect on fertility has been observed."

3/26/04 AIDS. ( reuters ) FDA Approves Rapid Saliva Test for AIDS Virus (photo). One-fourth of the roughly 900,000 HIV-infected people in the United States are not aware they have the virus, according to the CDC. With the test known as OraQuick Rapid HIV-1/2, a patient can now get an answer in just one clinic visit. The OraSure saliva test is cleared for detecting antibodies to HIV-1, but not for the HIV-2 strain that has remained largely confined to West Africa . OraSure's 20-minute blood test for HIV is approved for both types. Those who test positive can start paying drug companies quickly (my own cynical paraphrase of the Reuters story.)

Positive Thinking: Will they have a home test? See below for more on AIDS, including info on a cure, and see the Quick Guide to Strange Ideas (Health Section) for info on a military guy who says it is man made.

3/18/2004: DU Weapons: I know you don't want to hear this, but we (the USA) are using radioactive weapons. We have been doing it for years. According to some, we are using Weapons of Mass Distruction that will keep killing in Iraq until the end of the solar system.

We started using our new nukes on a large scale in military combat during the 1991 Gulf War.

"I hope you have a strong stomach.  This short video should be seen and heard by as many people as possible."

The "depleted uranium" we use as ammo is not really "depleted." It is still radioactive. In fact, it is deadly for over 4.5 billion years.

The radioactive armor-piercing shells we use cut through metal like butter because they are very heavy and they burn with a white hot nuclear fire on impact.

As it burns at temperatures of up to 10,000 degrees Centigrade it creates flying bits and dust that are radioactive and toxic.

The material for DU weapons comes from nuclear waste.

If you have the stomach to learn more, try the links below.

What is depleted uranium

Birthdefects from DU. (WARNING: graphic pictures. Recommendation: See it, get disturbed, then vote the war machine into its proper place. Then we need to start a MASSIVE expensive clean up that will take several lifetimes. )

How has the US used depleted uranium

Frontline, "Last Battle of the Gulf War" (includes reports of US soldiers harmed by our use of depleted uranium)

The misnamed 'Depleted' Uranium is left after enriched uranium is separated from natural uranium in order to produce fuel for nuclear reactors.

Some DU munitions have been found to contain traces of Plutonium, the most toxic substance known.

The offical line is that DU is not dangerous and people who are concerned about it may be suffering from hysteria. "As far as I have been told there is no scientific evidence that would link to a health hazard," Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told reporters. Defense Secretary William Cohen said: "We have found no scientific link between depleted uranium and leukemia as some have alleged."

"Even more impressive, they told of how a DU round had penetrated directly through a sand dune to demolish a tank hiding behind it. "That's how much of an edge it gives us, and we don't want to give that up," Col. James Naughton of the Army Materiel Command said today at a Pentagon briefing to explain the uses and health effects of DU on the battlefield. "

Anti-war publicist George Szamuely called the propaganda on the subject of DU "an orgy of lying."

3/11/2004: Butter Flavor: (CNN) Microwave popcorn artificial butter chemicals such as diacetyl, also known as 2,3-butanedione may be dangerous. Well, heck, let's just say diacetyl IS dangerous, but (as with most things) it depends on the amount.

"Chemical giant BASF studied the chemical, known as diacetyl, in 1993. The buttery-smelling chemical can be made from a solvent.
... After breathing diacetyl vapors for just four hours, some rats gagged and gasped for breath. Half the rats in the study died within a day."
- STLToday.

"NIOSH's rat study was published in the journal Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology in 2002." Read abstract here. Here is the OSHA revised statement from 06/19/2003. One page I found, by a chemist, I think says,

"The fact is that you probably eat considerable quantities of diacetyl in the course of a lifetime because in addition to being a food additive it is a naturally- occuring compound produced by fermentation reactions. Beer , for example, and presumably other alcoholic drinks, contain diacetyl which is formed from glucose during the fermentation of the malt by brewer's yeast and by bacteria..."

Sounds like there is not much to worry about, but you might skip the artifical butter in the future.

3/10/2004: Grave's Disease : (Scupper | SacBee ) What is wrong with this person? She has Grave's disease. How does one get this? Read on... Water Pollution: Aerojet, is a privately owned company that makes rocket fuel, pharmaceuticals and pesticides for government and commercial uses.

Aerojet owns 12,680 acres in Eastern Sacramento County, south of U.S. Highway 50. (map)

According to the March 10, 2004 Sacramento Bee front page, a migrating plume of "tainted groundwater" has rendered at least 18 wells undrinkable in neighborhoods west and south of its manufacturing complex in Rancho Cordova.

"Aerojet drilled and pulled a water sample at about 250 feet containing NDMA at 90 parts per trillion, nine times higher than the level state health officials consider acceptable."

A bit of hunting on the subject shows another bee article:

"In 1979, the state sued Aerojet for numerous water-quality violations and ordered the company to stop polluting. The order since has been folded into a federal court decree that obligates the company to clean up plumes of contaminated groundwater that stretch for miles. The cleanup of just one plume extending westward off the property is expected to last well over 200 years."

Aerojet has now also discovered its "rocket fuel pollution" crosses beneath the American River into the city of Carmichael at the same depths where drinking water is tapped. Perhaps you don't mind a little 200 year rocket fuel clean up project, but consider this. According to a site called companyethics,

"Aerojet is the Pentagon's largest supplier of DU weapons, producing 60 percent of all DU penetrator bullets. ... DU has a radioactive half-life of at least 4.5 billion years. IT IS DANGEROUS when inhaled or ingested. As an airborne contaminant, it has been known to travel as much as 26 miles in the form of toxic and radioactive dust. It has the ability to get into our ground water and soil when it rains."

Testing at the Chino Hills site east of L.A by the Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Toxic Substances Control

"...found evidence of mustard gas, nerve gas (probably VX), tear gas, explosive chemicals and other potentially dangerous materials (including depleted uranium, perchlorate, and TNT)."

We have no reason to think any of this super nasty stuff is used, made, or tested at the Rancho Cordova site, or that this is what is really leaking into the water, but it is interesting to note. A previous Bee article says, "Aerojet made a "secrecy pact" in 1979 to conceal the full nature and extent of pollution." In any case, the stuff we know is there is bad enough. One EPA site lists some pretty nasty contaminants for Rancho Cordova:

(VOCs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), 1,1-Dichloroethylene, 1,1-Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dychloroethylene, 1,2-Dichlorethane, 1,1,2-Trichloroethane, Carbon Tetrachloride, Vinyl chloride, chloroform, and Freon-113 and other rocket propulsion waste products or components such as perchlorate and N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

What are the dangers?

Cancer, thyroid ailments such as Graves' disease (photos above), neurological damage to fetuses and newborns. Hey, you support Bush, right? That means you support war. And to fight war, you need to make some weapons, right? Well, now you Republicans in Rancho Cordova get a little taste of cause and effect, aka "natural consequences" or Karma on tap. Vote Bush because a little water pollution never hurt anyone.

"Environmentalists are a socialist group of individuals that are the tool of the Democrat Party. I'm proud to say that they are my enemy. They are not Americans, never have been Americans, never will be Americans."

     - Rep. Don Young (R-AK), Alaska Public Radio, 08-19-96

Yeah right. Environmentalists who care about clean air and water are the enemy. Those Enviro-wackos are trying to take away your American freedom to drink perchlorate so you can look like these folks. Fight for your right to become deformed and diseased, Donny. Fight the good fight.

PS. Sorry this page is so gross, but at times the truth is disgusting.

3/6/2004: GMO Food: (NY Post | Reuters ) Mendocino County has banned genetically modified organisms. 14,839 voters who approved "Measure H" have shaken the establishment and CropLife America, the industry trade group that almost single-handedly funded the No on Measure H campaign has stated, "I don't think we can afford to let it stand."

What does that mean? Industry will override the voters? Humboldt county is gathering signatures and they plan to be next. Others may follow in as many as nine California counties. I read an article in Discover magazine about real and perceived threats which said GMO foods represent zero threat. How does one determine that something is of zero threat? The US may force GMO foods on Europe. The US government says GMO foods are safe, but in Europe, the have been banned. Why?

1. You can't control pollination. Once a plant has been modified, birds, insects, and the wind will carry the new genes to other plants. They will be incorporated with unpredictable results.

Example: Kraft Foods, producer of the taco shells, initiated its own investigation and voluntarily recalled millions of taco shells that contained a bio engineered variety of corn not approved for human consumption. An independent laboratory found that the shells contained the Cry9C gene from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis that expresses a protein--Cry9C. The FDA subsequently confirmed the presence of StarLink in the taco shells.

2. A study found immune system and organ impacts. Dr. Pusztai of the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen, UK conducted experiments where he fed rats with genetically engineered (GE) potatoes. "He was dismissed in August last year after announcing that significant impacts on the rat's immune system as well as on some of their vital organs had been observed. He is still not allowed to speak about his case in the public. "

This debate will be interesting to watch in the coming years, because we will certainly face food shortages. Some say we must eat GMO foods to survive, but other say this argument is bogus. To get more food, we just have to stop waste and develop sustainable farming methods. We tried the technology route in the past during the Green Revolution, when we sold pesticides to 3rd world countries and told them they would have food beyond their wildest dreams. They took out huge loans to buy the chemicals and equipment. After one generation, however, the pests adapted, came back in and wiped the crops out completely. Farms that had been sustainable for generations were destroyed because, as they say in Jurassic Park, "Nature finds a way."

3/6/2004: Health: (yahoonews | bbc ) Anti-AIDS drugs suppressed? Anti-retroviral drugs, if started within three days and taken for a month, reduce the HIV transmission rate to virtually zero, studies show.

A lack of publicity and widespread misinformation about the post-rape drug program, has undermined the effort, according to the Human Rights Watch report. According to the BBC, Antiretroviral drugs have succeeded in transforming HIV from a death sentence into chronic but apparently stable condition.

"In April / May 2001, Medilinks undertook a study to compare the cost of the various combination therapies of ARVs available. It found the cheapest drugs were generics that were produced by companies in India. However at $385 dollars a year ($1.1 dollars a day), even the lowest priced were still out of reach for most African nations, where the majority of people live on $1 dollar a day." - medlinks

This may explain a story I heard of a PeaceCorps worker who working in Africa at least a day and a half from the nearest town. When she got stuck with a syringe that contained the AIDS virus, she was air lifted from Africa to France to the US . She was treated and did not become infected with HIV. I think this was over a year ago. It didn't make any sense then because I didn't think there WAS any treatment that could stop the disease.

3/2/2004: Health/Freedom: (kron4) Paramedics are testing an experimental blood substitute called PolyHeme on severely injured patients without their consent in an unusual study under way around the country. Northfield Laboratories received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA authorized the use of an exception from informed consent requirements for this study.

Northfield Laboratories (nasdaq: NFLD - news - people ) is working with the U.S. Army to develop a protocol to test its experimental PolyHeme blood substitute on soldiers in the field, although the timing of such a trial is unclear.

Rumsfeld's conflict of interest and ASPARTAME: Rumsfeld was president of Serle corporation! part of Reagan transition team, and got aspartame 'legalized' by appointing a defense department contractor ( Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr) as head of FDA! ( colorado, sparrowdancer )

Once again we find our war machine behind a loss of freedom. If you want to be experimented on to help a solider, that's your choice. Fine. But what we are talking about here is the complete loss of choice. The substance sounds like it might be great:

PolyHeme's advantages are that it contains modified human hemoglobin, has a longer shelf life than human blood, can be used on all blood types, and remains in the body for about 24 hours. According to Dr. Ernest Moore, chief of trauma surgery at Denver Health Medical Center, "It could revolutionize how we take care of resuscitation in the United States and across the world."

The problem is, you can't do experiments on humans without their permission. Human rights are not something the FDA can waive. We are the people, not experimental animals. Check out the history of human research, before and after the Nazi's at the Alliance for Human Research Protection site. There have been some horrific human experiments conducted in secret by our government using radiation, biological agents, etc.

3/3/2004: Health: (CNN) Medical mysteries, bizarre cases. New book chronicles rare and odd ailments of human body, mind.

3/2/2004: Anti-bacterial Soap No Better: (Reuters) In a new study, people who used antibacterial soaps and cleansers developed cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms just as often as people who used products that did not contain antibacterial ingredients.

3/2/2004: Unexplained Deaths: (Yahoo) In a project resembling something out of the X Files, federal health officials say the causes of a quarter of the deaths that have stumped coroners in recent years appear to be from ordinary, treatable conditions. The "Unexplained Deaths Project" is a collection of data on the mysterious deaths of 227 children and adults from 1995 to 2003. ... a specific cause of death was found for just 53 of the cases.

2/26/2004: Atkins diet: Cutting down on carbs and increasing fat to lose weight works. Sure, but after six months on the program, you will have high levels of ketone bodies in your blood and urine which can lead to ketosis, which can damage your heart and other organs. High protein diets cause more uric acid which can lead to kidney stones. Atkins himself had frequent heart problems. Atkins himself (photo - looks kind of wide, doesn't he?) was overweight when he died at nearly 200 lbs.

2/26/2004: Material Safety: MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. This is the record that shows how dangerous a chemical compound is. You can search, for example, to find out about fluorine (element that combines to make fluoride in your water, toothpaste, etc.). Try the household products database. "What's under your kitchen sink, in your garage, in your bathroom, and on the shelves in your laundry room? Do these household products pose a potential health risk to you and your family?"

2/11/2004: Measuring Intelligence: ( MENSA ) Are you smart? Take the genius workout test on the MENSA web site. It isn't an IQ test, but you might enjoy it. "You have half an hour to answer 30 questions." Irony: The direct translation of mensa, according to wikipedia, is stupid female, menso meaning stupid male in Spanish.

2/24/2004: Hormone Therapy: (yahoo ) Hormone therapy, which has already been linked to increased risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, stroke and dementia, is now tied to a new ailment: hearing loss. But wait! Don't forget asthma. So how, exactly did this therapy ever get approved as safe?

2/19/2004: Antibiotics: Antibiotics may be linked to cancer. Steven Milloy (photo) says the study is bogus. Then again, Milloy loves to debunk stuff. For example, he said there is no connection between eating cows and getting mad cow disease. Specifically, that it "has not been scientifically established that prions cause any sort of disease". ( You go Seven. You go eat a mad cow. ) Is Milloy an "industry science whore" who says whatever he is paid to say, or is he a really smart scientist who knows a bad study when he sees one? I've heard both.

In the case of antibiotics and cancer, there is "no proof of a causal link nor any plausible biological explanation for how the drugs might cause cancer" according to Peter Sasieni, of Cancer Research UK's department of epidemiology, mathematics and statistics. Further research may show, for example, that some third factor was involved.

Here's a thought: We know that certain viruses cause cancer. Viruses and bacteria do interact. Antibiotics change bacterial populations in our bodies. So, could cancer causing viruses living inside bacteria be released when the bacteria are killed by antibiotics?

See our story on the alleged Cancer Cure from the 1930's.

2/17/2004: Is there Perchlorate, Chromium 6, and Arsenic in your drinking water? What about Barium, Coliform bacteria, Cryptosporidium, Fluoride, Giardia, MTBE, Nitrates, Radiation, Sulfate, and Trihalomethanes (THMs)? Piranha?

"So why did George Bush cut back on protections against arsenic in our drinking water? Is he pro-arsenic? Of course not. The problem is that special interests, and not George Bush, seem to be controlling America's environmental safety programs." - Gov. of Washington State.

2/17/2004: Autism and Vaccines: (firstcoast ) Link between autism and vaccines was known and covered up by the CDC according to newly obtained documents. The CDC had data that said thimerosal in measles, mumps and rubella vaccines was a dangerous neurotoxin. Thimerosal is a mercury-containing organic compound widely used as a preservative in a number of biological and drug products, including many vaccines according to the FDA. Yes, there are real conspiracies involving the CDC. This from a bona fide news source:

"The Centers for Disease Control published a study last fall repudiating any possible link between thimerosal and developmental problems like autism in children. However, First Coast News has obtained non-published documents that show the CDC DID have data supporting such a link-- but kept it from the public.

Documents released through the Freedom of Information Act, detail the transcript of a meeting held in June of 2000 between members of the CDC, the FDA, and representatives from the vaccine industry.

The group discusses the results of a February 2000 study that finds a significant association between exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines, and developmental issues like autism in children.

Some of the comments--

"There are just a host of neurodevelopmental data that would suggest we've got a serious problem."

"My gut feeling? It worries me. I don't want my grandson to get a thimerosal-containing vaccine until we know better what's going on."

"We are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits."

"We have asked you to keep this information confidential."

And that's what happened. Three years later, the CDC published a study in the November 2003 issue of "Pediatrics" contradicting the earlier results, and clearing thimerosal of any link to neurological problems in children.

Let's hope this makes people perk up enough that they start demanding true independent verification of drug company claims that things are safe.

Consider the Precautionary Principle. Because some experts are biased (bought by industry), it is reasonable that consumers checkout for themselves the details regarding possible dangers of products and health claims. It is the right and duty of the average person to obtain education and information to make intelligent choices.

2/6/2004: (CTV) Resveratrol: Red Wine: Cancer cure ... or cause?

Research: Substance Found in Grapes, Extends the life of Yeast

Resveratrol, found in the skin and seeds of red and purple grapes, activates an enzyme in yeast called SIR2 which is thought to extend life span (of yeast) by stabilizing DNA. Grapes are richest known food source of resveratrol.

Endorsement: Researcher Recommends Red Wine

A Dr. David Sinclair is quoted in a Reuters story saying, Not many people know about it yet, but those who do have almost invariably changed their drinking habits, that is, they drink more red wine.

Drinking Wine Doesn't Help To Get The Substance in Question

Some disagree that wine is the answer. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, "Scientists have found no evidence that the resveratrol could be absorbed into the human bloodstream through food or wine consumption. ... prominent researchers were unable to detect resveratrol in human bloodstreams, even after giving subjects "huge amounts of red wine" high in the compound. Wine Institute coverage of the study also omitted the authors' express reservations about the adverse effects of long-term alcohol consumption and their specific recommendation of foods and non-alcoholic beverages derived from grapes as preferable dietary sources of resveratrol. " - Vintage Deception: The Wine Institute's Manipulation of Scientific Research to Promote Wine. Also see this link which says drinking wine by the glass doesn't do it.

According to the Longevinex president, the reply to the above is here. I read it, but didn't see the evidence that resveratrol is absorbed into the human bloodstream from wine. There was a statement about biological activity and a reference to Science Magazine, Feb. 27, 2004.  I have asked the president of longevinex for clarification.

Why not recommend eating grapes?

Bill Sardi, President, Longevinex writes on 4/27/2004, "Significant amounts of resveratrol cannot be obtained from grapes. It is the fermentation that extracts the resveratrol from grape skin and the air tight bottle that preserves it in wine. There are no unusual reports of health from eating grapes, but there are stupendous reports of unusual health and longevity attributed to wine." In another email Mr. Sardi says ATF regulations keep the wine industry from labeling for resveratrol content. "... The problem is that red wine may have no resveratrol, or it may provide as much as 3 mg per 5-ounce glass."

Supplements for Sale / Conflict of Interest?

Is there another way to get resveratrol? Yes. One article cites the Harvard Doctor behind this study as starting, "Sirtris, a developmental drug company" ( also see ) and gives the Dr's contact information as the web site which sells resveratrol supplements at $34.95 per box. Is there a conflict of interest?

Bill Sardi, President, LONGEVINEX had this to say, "Dr. Sinclair at Harvard has no financial interest in Longevinex and your intimation that he does smears his name unfairly without giving him an opportunity to respond. You smudge someone's good name without evidence. You could contact Longevinex or Dr. Sinclair directly, but you were lazy and chose a smear tactic."

Good point. I should have contacted both Dr. Sinclair and longevinex to ask why was listed as contact information for him in the yahoo business article before I published. I have now asked this question of Mr. Sardi and the update is below.

According to " Sinclair briefly became a paid consultant to ... Longevinex . In late December, he announced that he had severed ties with Longevinex after the company broadcast comments from him on its Web site that Sinclair claimed were inaccurate. "

Mr. Sardi says this information is incorrect. "Yes, Longevinex discussed a business relationship with Dr. Sinclair, as a consultant, early on in the development of the product, but Harvard frowned on such a relationship and he declined any business relationship.  Dr. Sinclair has conducted independent tests showing Longevinex is the only resveratrol product with biological activity.  Also confirmed by Biomol, another independent lab in Pennsylvania."

So, this does all seem to be currently on the up and up. Good to know. Nevertheless, as a cautionary tale, this points out the close relationship between University researchers and the companies that benefit from their research. Temptation still exists.

Now, on to the health benefits ...

What is the Correct Dose?

"In his experiments with wild yeast, concentrations of 10 and 100 uM resveratrol increased life span by roughly 75%, but when the concentration was raised to 500 uM, the increased life span was only 25%." Was there an any amount given to yeast that caused a reduction in life span?

How do you get the correct dose? Mr Sadi says the dose is "based upon wine consumption and various studies showing 3- 5 glasses of red wine provide optimal benefits."

What Seems to be a Cure, May Cause of Cancer?

One article claims resveratrol enhances the deacetylation of the human p53 protein reducing its activity. I found it interesting that Resveratrol reduces this protein which is a tumor suppressor. Most human cancers have a mutation and lack of this functioning protein. In light of this, what makes resveratrol and ANTI-cancer agent? Research at the Dept of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto, says wine polyphenols will not cause cancer because "observed p53 concentration changes upon stimulation by polyphenols are relatively small, do not follow a uniform pattern in the four cell lines tested, and do not exhibit a dose-response effect." If I read correctly, the reduction of p53 by resveratrol does happen, but not enough to make a difference.

Harmless Recommendation?

The articles I read say Resveratrol from wine doesn't enter the human bloodstream, even if you drink a lot. There is no documented positive effect from drinking wine due to this substance. Are there any negative effects of drinking wine? Yes: Cancer, Brain Damage to your baby's brain to name two. The American Cancer Society is very clear: "Drinking alcohol can cause cancer. The more a person consumes alcohol, the higher his or her risk..."

Bill Sardi, President, LONGEVINEX, on the other hand replied that "there are stupendous reports of unusual health and longevity attributed to wine." When I replied with skepticism and asked for peer reviewed non-wine industry funded research on health and longevity attributed to wine, he provided these references. Mr. Sardi was very patient in answering my questions. Check out his books because he seems as intelligent, focused and dedicated to improving health as anyone I've yet met.

If there is independent research that explains how resveratrol works as an anti-cancer and anti-aging agent, I may try the supplements. ( For now I'll stick with Vitamin C. ) Red wine: sure for fun from time to time, but I won't think of it as good for me until I see the unbiased research.

2/4/2004: You owe it to yourself to find out if you are being treated for a made up disorder invented to sell drugs. Sound impossible? See (cbc) "Article suggests 'female sexual dysfunction' created to sell drugs" and ( "A new study by Yale University scholars, which found that one in every four biomedical researchers at U.S. universities receives research funding directly from industry." Are some new diseases, such as 'Nocturnal GERD,' the result of grants from companies that produce anti-stomach acid drugs?

I tried Protonix and I kept getting worse and worse. I also had night time heart rhythm problems while on it. Right before I was going to have a stomach operation, I quit the drug, loosened my belt, slept slightly propped up with pillows, dropped sugar and soft drinks from my diet. Wham, no more stomach problems. No drugs. I've been fine for years. ( This is NOT medical advice, just my observation. Consult your doctor, preferably one who is skeptical of the drug pushers.)

2/4/2004: (KSBWChannel) All fish from wild salmon to bagged frozen shrimp to Mrs. Paul's fish sticks will soon carry new labels stating where it was caught, processed, and if it is wild or farmed.
