12/6/02: Weird Exits: Man found dead in wall 44 years after leaving for 'trip to U.S.' An Italian man who packed his bags 44 years ago and told friends he was leaving for America was found dead inside one of the walls of his home. An American woman who recently bought the house near Lucca in northern Tuscany discovered the body as she was carrying out renovations, police said. Inside a thick wall in the cellar the woman found human remains, two packed suitcases, a trowel and other equipment to make a wall, a rusted rifle and a bottle with a suicide note.
The note, on paper headed with the name Nemo Cianelli, explained that the man had discovered he had an incurable disease and had decided to kill himself. He said he had invented the tale of going to America to avoid upsetting his family. Local newspapers reported in 1958 that Cianelli was missing, and speculated that he might have gone to America, but after a period of rumor and mystery, the story was forgotten. Police said it appeared Cianelli had packed his suitcases, written the suicide note, built a wall up around himself and then shot himself. What can you say about this one? Interesting and creative departure.
11/22/02: Natural Mummification: Mummified bodies in SW Florida home perplex police. For more than three years, no one checked on the small white house with the unruly yard in this sprawling suburban area of southwestern Florida. But when a former caretaker grew suspicious and entered the home on Wednesday, he made a gruesome discovery: the partially mummified bodies of a German woman, her son and their German shepherd dog, undisturbed in their deaths since 1999. Do preservatives in our food make our bodies decay slower? Perhaps, but mummification sometimes happens naturally when the conditions are right. (Warning: Gross picture) "Partially mummified" does not mean these dead people were wrapped in bandages like the stereotypical Egyptian mummy. (Here is an interesting video.)

pounced on the face of two-year-old Kelsi and sank its teeth into her forehead. Kelsi's mother Karen had to pin the girl to the floor and pull the animal off her face. Now that's strange. This is not a good place to be a two-year-old. Just six months ago in this same area a two-year-old boy died after falling into a lake while playing in his grandparents' garden. A search for Knutsford may prove interesting. This article also speaks of the flesh eating squirrel.
