12/19/2005 Cryptozoology Home of the Mothman.
"West Virginia has played host to two famous monsters, both within a span of a dozen years. In 1955, a 12-foot-tall space creature landed in a flying saucer and terrified the town of Flatwoods. And in 1966-67, a monster nicknamed "Mothman" performed a similar frightfest on the citizens of Point Pleasant. But today, the Flatwoods monster -- it never got a name -- is almost invisible on the vacation landscape. All that the town of Flatwoods offers are some monster replicas for sale ($25) in the gas station next to the Shoney's. In contrast, Point Pleasant is keenly attuned to the needs of the modern monster tourist. It has a very cool Mothman statue. It has a Mothman museum. It sells lots of Mothman merchandise. Why the difference? Mothman was made into a Hollywood movie in 2001 and thus is more than a monster -- he's a celebrity." - roadside
This statue is not very close to what eyewitnesses said the mothman looked like. For sketches from the original real mothman sighting, check here.
12/6/2005 Cryptozology / Biology. A New Beast in Borneo. Next stop: extinction?
"A creature unknown to scientists has been found in dense tropical rainforest on the island of Borneo. The mammal has only been seen so far in photographs caught by a camera trap. ... WWF caught two images of the animal, which is bigger than a domestic cat, dark red, and has a long muscular tail. ... The find was made in Kayan Mentarang national park on Borneo. ... [Due to forest destruction, this and ] other as yet unknown creatures may go extinct before their existence can be documented. " - bbc

11/10/2005 Biology / Cryptozoology. Giant Ape (Bigfoot Ancestor?) Co-existed with humans
"A gigantic ape standing 10 feet tall and weighing up to 1,200 pounds lived alongside humans for over a million years, according to a new study. ... Scientists have known about Gigantopithecus blackii since the accidental discovery of some of its teeth on sale in a Hong Kong pharmacy about 80 years ago. ... Now Jack Rink, a geochronologist at McMaster University in Ontario, has used a high-precision absolute-dating method (techniques involving electron spin resonance and uranium series) to determine that this ape – the largest primate ever – roamed Southeast Asia for nearly a million years before the species died out 100,000 years ago during the Pleistocene period. By this time, humans had existed for a million years." - livesci
For my God lovin' and other science learning friends: Read this Christain perspective on radiometic dating techniques.
"There are now well over forty different radiometric dating techniques, each based on a different radioactive isotope. ... It has become increasingly clear that these radiometric dating techniques agree with each other and as a whole, present a coherent picture in which the Earth was created [4.5-4.6 billion years] ago. Further evidence comes from the complete agreement between radiometric dates and other dating methods such as counting tree rings or glacier ice core layers. Many Christians have been led to distrust radiometric dating and are completely unaware of the great number of laboratory measurements that have shown these methods to be consistent."
10/17/2005 Bigfoot. (msnbc) Bigfoot expo shines light on hairy mystery
Hundreds gather in Texas to discuss Sasquatch sightings. "... there have been more than 2,550 seemingly credible Bigfoot sightings reported in North America the past century, according to Christopher L. Murphy's 2004 book “Meet the Sasquatch.” ... Colyer and others estimate that about 2,000 are in North America today, reclusive nocturnal animals living in thickly wooded areas with waterways, eating meat and plants and making nests out of trees and brush.

9/28/2005 Cryptozoology. Giant Squid are real! Scientists Observe Live Giant Squid.
Yet another crazy conspiracy theory turns out to be true. Since at least the 1860's skeptics have ridiculed people for their belief in the giant squid. "No serious scientist could believe in such a creature." You might want to pay closer attention to people's reports of strange creatures.
"When a nearly 6-meter-long (19 foot) tentacle was hauled aboard his research ship, Tsunemi Kubodera knew he had something big. Then it began sucking on his hands. But what came next excited him most -- hundreds of vivid photos of a rare giant squid in its natural habitat deep undersea." - moscowtimes
"This is a photo released by Dr. Tsunemi Kubodera of the National Science Museum, showing an 8-meter (26-foot) long Architeuthis attacking prey hung by a rope, white line at left, at 900 meters (yards) deep off the coast of Japan's Bonin islands, 1,000 kilometers (670 miles) south of Tokyo, in the fall of 2004. The camera was operated by remote control. (HO, National Science Museum / AP)"
This is a dead baby giant squid on land. The one photographed above under water is over twice this size.
9/9/2005 Cryptozoology (kfty) Donate to Xeno's "Cash Reward for a Live Chupacabra".
Around Aug 16, 2005, another "Cupacabra" was shot and killed. I hate to see a unique animal killed. Ranchers, I'll personally give you a $50 reward (and growing) if you catch one alive and let me come and pick it up and take it to a vet instead of killing it! No coyotes with mange, shaved dogs or other tricks please. Animal must match creature in photo (or be some other large as yet unclassified land animal).
The "coyote with mange" theory seems far fetched to me. I'd like to find out for sure. As far as I know Coyotes don't have tails that long.
Also, Reginald reported it had a woolly coating, instead of hair. "The animal's hide felt like wool." (earthfiles interview). It seems to be a large as yet unclassified land mammal.
See our Chupacabra article about a multiple eye-witness sighting in California.
"In Coleman, a city of 5,100 or so people 52 miles south of Abilene Reginald Lagow, 89. Lagow and neighbor Carole Burroughs lost about 30 chickens total. The creature was quick. Burroughs, 71, never saw it alive, even though it hunted during the day. Lagow tried to catch it in traps, but the animal was too smart, he said. Lagow saw it catch one of the last of his chickens, but it scampered away before he could get close. He said it had rusty-colored hair and it looked unlike anything he had ever seen. Finally, a neighbor's dog cornered the creature in a chicken coop and the man shot it. Lagow snapped pictures of the animal's body."
"Since Memorial Day 2004, three strange creatures that look alike have been killed on Texas farms in Elmendorf near San Antonio; Pollok near Lufkin; and Coleman southeast of Abilene."

8/24/2005 Cryptozoology. Bigfoot Captured? Bigfoot Invisible?
"First hour guest, cryptozoologist Loren Coleman reacted to Tom Biscardi's Bigfoot hunt. On Friday night's program, Biscardi claimed his group had captured one of the creatures and he would be presenting photos of it on Monday. " ... more
Remember, extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. No pics or video of something like this in this day and age would almost certainly make it a hoax.

8/19/2005 Strange Happenings / Cryptozoology. Ugliest dog contest winner is not a Chupacabra
"Sam, the above-pictured canine, is a 14-year-old pedigreed Chinese crested owned by Susie Lockheed of Santa Barbara, California. In June 2005, Sam won the "World's Ugliest Dog" title at the Sonoma-Marin Fair contest for the third consecutive year." - snopes
8/12/2005 Cryptozoology. Dragons in skies over Tibet?
"A photo of two peculiar dragon-shaped objects taken from a plane flying over Tibet's Himalayas piqued many users' interest when displayed on a Chinese website. The photographer is an amateur.
On June 22, 2004, the photographer went to Tibet's Amdo region to attend the Qinghai-to-Xizang Railroad laying ceremony, and then took a plane from Lhasa to fly back inland. When flying over the Himalayas, he accidentally caught these two "dragons" in a picture that he took. He called these two objects "the Tibet dragons."
Looking at the photo, these two objects appear to have the characteristics of crawling creatures: The bodies seem to be covered by scales, the backs have spine-like protuberances, and also they have gradually thinning rear ends. Although the photo caught only a portion of the entire scene, it was sufficient to create the appearance of two gigantic dragons flying in the clouds. " - more here.

8/2/2005 Cryptozoology. Unidentified Sea Creature Found After China Typhoon
"Early on the morning of July 23, a fisherman from Ningbo City in east China's Zhejiang Province was shocked by the sight of a huge creature lying dead beside the seawall near his home. It was first seen by villagers on July 20, according to Mei who breeds fish nearby, and is nearly 12 meters long and weighs around 2 tons, according to district sea and fishery bureau staff. The animal reportedly has a long thin head and a snout nearly one meter long. Partly rotten, with its spine exposed, it has been impossible to identify, but has been described as having some hair, and orange stripes across a three to four-meter wide belly. The skull, which alone weighs over 100 kg, and coccyx of the creature have fallen from its body." - more
7/8/2005 Cryptozoology / Physics. Transparent Tissue the Answer to Bigfoot Vanishing?
This facinating article caught my attention because I actually HAVE had someone write to me to say she has seen a Bigfoot that was only partially visible, and not just because trees were in the way. She was certain she saw part of a bigfoot and thought that whatever it was was able to move between dimensions (More alien than lost ape). A creature with the ability to turn itself transparent as a form of camoflague may be an explanation regarding her experience of a moving bigfoot that was invisible from the waist down. I once heard a comedian say, "May be Bigfoot just IS blurry and out of focus." Perhaps this joke is funny because it is true. Thanks to Pearl Jo. I'll comment on the science when I have a chance to read it carefully and do some research.
"...scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a way of turning rat and hamster skin transparent."
...Photosynthetic Piezoelectric Induced Transparency (PPIT). PPIT is very similar to electromagnetically induced transparency except that this may be a natural occurring event, with the right external forces. As in the Texas scientists who are working toward the Invisible Man, we see many possibilities coming to light. Invisible beings may be a very real possibility via PPIT.
Team of 20 physicists from four institutions has literally made something from nothing, creating particles of matter from ordinary light for the first time. Click here to go to Source
Something from nothing and nothing from something, going from matter to energy, that is the point here. A very plausible explanation of how Bigfoot is “disappearing.” In reality he may be just altering his cells light refractive properties, via PPIT."
"Fishermen in northern Thailand have netted a fish as big as a grizzly bear, a 646.2-pound Mekong giant catfish, ( 8.9 feet long) the heaviest recorded since Thai officials started keeping records in 1981. The behemoth was caught in the Mekong River and may be the largest freshwater fish ever found.
... Dr. Zeb Hogan, a WWF Conservation Science fellow and leader of a new World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and National Geographic Society project to identify and study all freshwater fish over 6 feet long or 200 pounds. "We've now confirmed now that this catfish is the current record holder, an astonishing find."
7/1/2005 Cryptozoology. Are Living Dinosaurs Seen in Modern Times?
"Reports of strange flying reptiles, some quite large, have continued well into modern times. As we shall see, reports of pteranodons, dragons, thunderbirds, and other similar monsters, are relatively common. ... Giant bats, huge super-eagles called "pteratorns" and weird "mothmen" have all been put forward as explanations of these various reports. Now I come forward to state, unequivocably, that I believe these legends and sightings can be attributed to still-living flying dinosaurs-to pterodactyls or, more precisely, pteranodons. " -educate
It would be nice to find a reasonable explanation for the Mothman event after all these years, but the descriptions of the Mothman were pretty clear. Would some version of a pteranodon have red eyes in its shoulders, muscular legs like a man, and no visible head??
6/13/2005 Biology / Cryptozoology. Of Ligers and Tigons.
"The 10ft Liger who's still growing... He looks like something from a prehistoric age or a fantastic
creation from Hollywood. But Hercules is very much living flesh and blood - as he proves every time he opens his gigantic mouth to roar. Part lion, part tiger, he is not just a big cat but a huge one, standing 10ft tall on his back legs. Called a liger, in reference to his crossbreed parentage, he is the largest of all the cat species. On a typical day he will devour 20lb of meat, usually beef or chicken, and is capable of eating 100lb at a single setting. At just three years old, Hercules already weighs half a ton."
He is the accidental result of two enormous big cats living close together at the Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species, in Miami, Florida, and already dwarfs both his parents. "Ligers are not something we planned on having," said institute owner Dr Bhagavan Antle. "We have lions and tigers living together in large enclosures and at first we had no idea how well one of the lion boys was getting along with a tiger girl, then lo and behold we had a liger."
50mph runner... Not only that, but he likes to swim, a feat unheard of among water-fearing lions. In the wild it is virtually impossible for lions and tigers to mate. Not only are they enemies likely to kill one another, but most lions are in Africa and most tigers in Asia. But incredible though he is, Hercules is not unique. Ligers have been bred in captivity, deliberately and accidentally, since shortly before World War II.
Today there are believed to be a handful of ligers around the world and a similar number of tigons, the product of a tiger father and lion mother. Tigons are smaller than ligers and take on more physical
characteristics of the tiger.
Cute pictures, but don't try this at home. Wild animals can and do turn on their trainers even after years of being friendly. (See Roy Horn. )
5/16/2005 Cryptozoology / Strange Beliefs (reuters). The Popo Bawa, a Lustful Bat-Like Ogre.
The Popo Bawa is "a bat-like ogre said to prey on men, women and children. ... for superstitious Zanzibaris a visit from the sodomising gremlin is no joke. Although no one ever has seen it, belief in the monster and his unnatural lust is so strong that entire villages will sleep out of doors for protection: Popo Bawa (Swahili for Bat's Wing) prefers to attack behind closed doors at night. In huts set amid rustling groves of jackfruit and mangoes on Zanzibar's Pemba island, victims told Reuters in interviews that they detected a bad smell, became cold and went into a trance in the moments before they felt the creature's inhuman strength. Some attacks were heralded by the sound of giant wings and claws rattling and scraping on huts' tin roofs. Others cringed in terror at what sounded like a car engine ticking over."
The bat-like part makes me think of the Mothman. Could the two be related? What foul beasts dwell unseen in Zanzibar?
5/13/2005 Cryptozoology. Chupacabra, Reader Comments:See our Chupacabra article, and Crytpozoolgy news (to wee the Aye Aye).
Yo, I am a veterinarian in northern minnesota and I have two of these type of creatures in my practice. They are dogs suffering from genetic skin mutations. Many dogs which have "blue" coats, like some Samoyeds, some Dobermans, and others can throw dangerous genetic skin mutations which will make the animal hairless. In addition the condition is frequently accompanied by nasty scaly lesions, atypical toenail growth and appearance and even strange tooth growth. Many Chinese Hairless dogs have wierd spikey teeth. Some wierd gene brought along with the hairless thing. Having more than one in an area probably means they are related a generation or two back. Since the animal with this kind of near lethal genetic mutation probably has a whole host of genetic problems, immune dificiency among them it would also be possible for an immune compromised animal to be more likely to have mange. You have probably received similar reports from other vets. Nice site. You got to love the Aye-Aye
Foremost Bigfoot expert Matthew Moneymaker of the Bigfoot Field Research Group Matthew Moneymaker testified to the videotapes' apparent authenticity.
“It leans toward being not a human, and when it's not a human and it does not fit the description of things people see in other places, then it's more likely a Sasquatch.”

5/8/2005 Cryptozoology. What exactly was the 'Dover Demon?'
The bizarre tale begins at 10:30 p.m. on April 21 as three 17-year-olds, Bill Bartlett, Mike Mazzocca and Andy Brodie, are driving north on Farm Street. Bartlett, who's behind the wheel of a Volkswagen, spots something creeping along a low wall of loose stones on the left side of the road. At first he thinks the image is a dog or a cat until his headlights shine on it and he realizes it's nothing he's ever seen before.
The figure slowly turns its head and stares into the light, its two large, round, glassy, lidless eyes shining brightly "like two orange marbles." Its watermelon-shaped head, resting at the top of a thin neck, is the size of the rest of its body. Except for its oversized head, the creature is thin, with long spindly arms and legs, and large hands and feet. The skin is hairless and peach-colored and appears to have a rough ure. "Like wet sandpaper," Bartlett subsequently tells Coleman. Standing no more than 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall, the figure is shaped like "a baby's body with long arms and legs." It had been making its way along the wall, its long fingers curling around the rocks, when the car lights surprised it. Read more.
5/3/2005 Cryptozoology. Scientists search for Mongolian Death Worm Attempt to confirm existence of legendary beast.
Mongolian nomads have made extraordinary claims about the animal, reporting that the death worm can spit a corrosive yellow saliva that acts like acid and that they have the ability to generate blasts of electricity powerful enough to kill a full grown camel.
The Mongolian Death Worm is generally considered a cryptozoological creature, an animal whose existence is disputed and/or unconfirmed. To date there are no scientifically reliable sightings but the expedition's leader, cryptozologist Richard Freeman, hopes to prove once and for all whether this much feared beast of legend actually exists.
Freeman has his own theory on the death worm: “I don't think that it's a worm at all. True worms need moisture. I think it is a limbless, burrowing reptile, probably a giant member of a group of reptiles known as amphisbaenas or worm lizards. These are a primitive group of poorly studied animals. They are not snakes or lizards but are related to both. I think the Death Worm is a giant member of this group.†- mongabay
The aye-aye is a creature thought so ugly that in its native jungle superstitious villagers beat it to death - but it has become the pride and joy of Bristol Zoo.
At first keepers wanted to call this baby Gollum, after its striking resemblance to the anti-hero of The Lord of Rings, but instead decided on Kintana, which means star in Madagascar, where the aye-aye originates.
These extraordinary nocturnal creatures are so rarely seen that they were once thought to have become extinct. Numbers are uncertain and they are listed in the international "red book" of endangered species.
Bristol is only one of two zoos in the world which have bred aye-ayes successfully and hopes the lessons learned will help to ensure the species' survival.
"They do look like gremlins, and at first sight it is hard to believe they are real," said Caroline Brown, senior keeper of small mammals at the zoo's Twilight World. "Initially we were wary of getting too attached to Kintana but when he comes ... across the cage in welcome and sits in your hand it is very hard not to."
4/20/2005 Cryptozoology New Bigfoot Video Alleged. (Video remains private for now...)
"Residents have been flocking to Georgina Henry's house to watch two minutes and 49 seconds of video shot by her son, Bobby Clarke, on the banks of the Nelson River shortly after dawn Saturday morning. "It's pictures of Bigfoot," she said. "It's black and it's big. Oh god, it's huge - seven or eight feet high," Henry said. "We can see him walking, and then turning to look at him (Clarke). Clarke said he was on duty at his job as a car ferry operator when he saw a "big, black figure" on the opposite bank, about 250 to 300 metres away. He grabbed his camcorder, which he said he always has with him. "It was just massive, standing tall. I'm freaked out," Clarke said Monday in an interview from the ferry at an uninhabited bush area 40 kilometres from Norway House. ... He said the creature walked upright on two legs back into the bush, barely 200 metres away from the ferry dock." -azcentral

About your news: "Phuket deep sea creatures found on the seaside after the tsunami." As a former student in marine biology, i've found it weird, most of these species belonging to bathypelagic depth... Hmm... It's a hoax, please check it at: http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=546 However, the PHOTOS ARE REAL and come from: http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/about/fieldwork/norfanz/index.htm
Please, have a look at Mr Blobby! ;) Nice "eclectic" site, your report on the "chupacabra" is interesting, especially with the poor dog: did you show these pics to a veterinarian? Keep it skeptic, have a nice day, Blob
Thanks! Good to know, I'll update my Cryptozoology news archives asap. For the curious, "The bathypelagic zone refers to water of a depth deeper than 1000m ( 3,280 feet or 0.62 miles). 74% of the volume of the worlds oceans are bathypelagic ." -mrothery

3/16/2005 Cryptozoology. (woai) Rancher Dissatisfied with Chupacabra DNA Results.
"Remember the Elmendorf Beast? That mystery animal a rancher shot dead on his property in South Bexar County? The man who found it is hoping to get new DNA results. Devin MacAnally says he has received the results of a DNA test, but he won't reveal them. He says he's not happy with the results. Representatives from Texas Parks and Wildlife speculate that it's a coyote with mange. The hairless beast with sharp teeth sparked speculation that the animal was a Chupacabra of South Texas folklore. MacAnally says he plans to look for someone else to do a new DNA test. He hopes to make those arrangements in the next couple of weeks. We'll let you know what he finds out."

FICTION (?): "According to Costello's account, genetic experiments were carried out on a variety of life forms (including fish, birds, mice, seals and humans) on level six - or "Nightmare Hall" as it was known. The products of these experiments were also stored on level six - lined up in tanks containing multi-limbed humans and also a number of cages lodging tall, humanoid, bat-like creatures." -thewhyfiles | Also see: ufoinfo
FACT: "Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells. In Minnesota last year researchers at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood flowing through their bodies. And at Stanford University in California an experiment might be done later this year to create mice with human brains. Scientists feel that, the more humanlike the animal, the better research model it makes for testing drugs or possibly growing "spare parts," such as livers, to transplant into humans. "
Xenotransplantation is the growing of human parts in other animals (pigs, for example) and the harvesting of animal-grown organs for human use. This can be disasterous because you can transfer new diseases to our species. Besides, growing human brains in mice is cruel, gross and unnatural. I'm against it. But, like it or not, thanks to human nature, everything will be attempted. Have secret labs been growing part-human creatures for years, perhaps attempting create super fighters? Consider the Mothman story: Escaped experimental creature? That seems so very unlikely... but today scientists are successfully producing creatures that are part-human. Fiction blurs into fact.
