6/17/2005 Alt Energy Room Temperature Super Conductors
A patent from a company related to Magnetic Power Inc. describes a room temperature polymer material with a conductivity exceeding 10,000,000 S/cm. What does this mean? This patent is part of the work on room temperature superconducting plastics. In the year 2000 the Nobel Prize for chemistry was awarded to researchers who demonstrated that plastics can conduct electricity.

Why is a room temperature super conductor (RTSC) is the holy grail of solid-state physics?
Room temperature superconductors would revolutionize transportation, networking and computing. Imagine high-speed trains that levitate on superconducting magnets and amaing new computer chips, and that's just the beginning! More here.
Electricity is a flow of electrical charge. Conductivity measures how well charges flow in a without losing energy to heat. Conductivity is measured in Siemens. Electrical resistance is measured in Ohms. 1 Siemen = (1/ ohm ). In super conductors, resistance is zero (conductivity is infinite) and Magnetic fields are actively excluded. Because of this a permanent magnet above a superconductor will levitate! This happens because induced supercurrents produce mirror images of each pole creating a repulsive force no matter what direction the magnet is facing.
