Magnetic Levitation

10/17/03: Maglev / Space Elevator

The proposed space elevator above would use Magnetic Levitation. "American scientists James R. Powell and Gordan T. Danby patented the first design for magnetic levitational trains in 1969." Yet Federal support was terminated in 1975. Other say by 1986 - The United States refused to fund any future research of Maglev technology. Why? ( We told you here years ago we'd heard rumors of Maglev bullet trains crisscrossing the US in secret underground tunnels. ) The NASA site dated October 22, 1999 says "Several countries, including Japan, Germany, and the United States are trying maglev trains." Where was this being tried in the US in 1999? An article says at ABCNews dated May 25, 1999 said "Seven projects in seven states are working on developing the nation’s first magnetic levitation train. The hope is to reduce congestion with high-speed rail."

On June 19, 2002 the supposed first Maglev train in the US was delivered to The Old Dominio University in Norfolk, VA. The neat thing about these trains is that they are cheaper to build than our freeways. "Our studies show that maglev travel will cost $20 million to $40 million per mile. What most people don’t know is that four-lane highways cost about $30 million per mile.” They are also clean ( pollution emissions 12.2 grams of carbon dioxide per person per kilometre ), quiet ( at a typical speed of 155 mph, the generated 69dB at 330 feet would completely disappear in normal background noise of a city.) and energy efficient ( 5 times less energy than an airplane for the same passenger mile.)
